I frequently receive emails asking what type of computer and software I use to search through the hours of audio/video footage following a paranormal investigation. So, I decided to write an article and let you know the answer is simple; I use a Mac. I don’t claim to be a Mac expert, but I’ll share several reasons I’ve completely severed my ties with the Windows world and become a loyal customer of Apple, Inc.
First, I need a computer that works. I once read on Apple’s website that “you expect your toaster to work, so why not your computer?” I’ve been using a Mac for six years and it always works, period. No system freeze-ups, applications suddenly quitting, Control+Alt+Deletes or expensive virus software – It just works.
Second, there’s amazing software that comes with a Mac. For example, I needed to quickly upload a paranormal experience at the Trans-Alleghany Lunatic Asylum (Below). Using the included iMovie software I connected my camera, imported the scene and added a quick title – With the click of a button it was ready to view on YouTube. I’m not a professional at video editing, yet the entire process took less than 10-minutes. Even cooler, I could have sent the video file to iDVD, another included program, and burnt a DVD with interactive menus that have the professional look and feel you would expect from a video store rental. Still not impressed? With the click of a different button I could have created a brand new website using iWeb, another included application, and shared the video online in minutes.
Third, the MacBook Pro I purchased two years ago is still better than your brand new PC. When you purchase a PC they quickly become obsolete. This is where people naively say, “Apple’s are so much money.” I couldn’t disagree with them more. Equally configure a junk-parted Dell and then add the software you’re not getting – Now tell me how much it will cost.
Fourth, Apple has outstanding customer care. I worked as a US expatriate in the Philippines for six months – Several of my electronics failed due to their developing power systems and my Apple power adapter eventually fell victim to the frequent surges. I called Apple Care and their US rep, yes, US rep (they don’t outsource call center agents) quickly assisted me and mailed a brand new power adapter to my temporary housing in Manila. Total cost to me = $0.00. I had a brand new power adapter in less than 48 hours. To be fair, I’m sure Michael Dell and his India call center agents are happy to assist their customers, too.
Fifth, a lot of paranormal investigators perform EVP work. GarageBand, another included application, allows you to do almost anything you can dream up with your ghostly audio files. GarageBand is a streamlined digital audio workstation and music sequencer, which can record and play back multiple tracks of audio – Built in audio filters allow the audio track to be enhanced. GarageBand is so powerful that many famous recording artists complete their entire albums using it – Fall Out boy, Nine Inch Nails, Courtney Love, Limp Bizkit, Panic! At The Disco – Just to name a few. You can also record your own paranormal Podcast using GarageBand.
I haven’t even scratched the surface – There are thousands of other amazing applications. What I like most about my Mac is that it feels brand new each day that I use it – The newness still has not worn away and its 100% uptime allows me to spend more time being creative. I strongly encourage you to find out more by visiting www.apple.com/getamac.

If you’re not using a Mac you suck!
God I hate mac Zealots…they give mac users a bad name.
my 2 year old mac is better than your new PC?
Nice flame bait dude..
My 8 year old mac is better then a brand new pc I hate windows and dell and toshiba and hp APPLE RULES!!!
Your first point is merely buying into the Apple bullshit marketing. The only people who think that PCs don’t work are people who don’t use them. The PC I’m using right now hasn’t blue-screened in the whole time that I’ve owned it (roughly 2 years), and it’s been almost constantly on (it gets left on overnight).
Your third point is simply uninformed. Hardware-wise, Apples are now using the same equipment as a Dell PC. Also, “obsolete” doesn’t mean that my equipment suddenly deteriorates, it means that newer stuff has come on the market, and that newer software is being written for those higher specs. Again, this would have been true 5-10 years ago, but with the specs of most PC hardware, it takes several years for the PC of last year to become obsolete. It’s also, typically, the game market that pushes the PC specs higher and higher. Clearly not a problem for Macs…
Your fourth point is just racist.
Your second point is fair, there’s not many good software bundles that come with PCs. That said, there’s a lot of good (free) software online that just takes a short while of browsing to find. Don’t want to spend that hour? Fair enough.
I don’t use audio files much, so I have no idea if there’s a comparative program available for the PC.
Regardless: this is a very blinkered and ignorant article.
Brian it is ignorant of you say the forth point is racist. I hate getting the over seas people on the phone but i dont hate them and i am sure that was not the message. it is frustrating and makes most people want to scream when they have some person in another country who took a US job away and they cant even understand us or help you with the reason you called. how on earth did you get racism out of that?
I think all of you are ignorant. Windows sucks Apple sucks all computers suck and all of you suck.
Apple computers are the best for everything and now I suppose even ghost hunting
Hi,
I am replying from a PC that has been running without issue for months since buying it. My previous laptop was a couple of years old and never skipped a beat, hardware or operating system. I use an iPhone so am not an Apple basher and I use linux based OS’s also on a daily basis.
I would like to start by saying that your article is absolutely biased and sounds like so much of the propaganda that is out there about Mac V PC. It is an individuals choice what they choose to use and it is the kind of blatant misinformation you are spreading that makes the choice even more difficult for less technical people.
I have to be honest and say that your article sounds like you are plugging Apple because they gave you something for free. I am not stating this as fact but you do sound like a spokesperson from Apple.
I have had reason to contact my old laptop’s manufacturer for support and to order a part. The person I spoke to was from America and the part was shipped to me in 2 days.
As already mentioned in a reply above Mac’s now use a lot of the same technical architecture as every other laptops/PC’s. To say they do not is to misinform.
Your 2 year old Mac is not better than my brand new PC, firstly because you do not know the spec of my brand new PC and secondly you rhymed off many simple to do tasks like basic video editing and uploading videos to the Internet, my computer was doing this when it had windows 2000 on it, does that make it better than your Mac from 2008?
Anyway, I found your article on the Skeptical Inquirer facebook page and although I never really comment on articles like this I felt compelled. The Skeptical Inquirer also made a very interesting point about the audio software you claim “allows you to do almost anything you can dream up with your ghostly audio files”. Surely with so much processing carried out with this software you can make a blip sound like anything you want it to?
If EVP is to be believed dont you think it should be clearly audible without needing the sophisticated audio manipulation software you have described?
Finally for anyone thinking of buying a PC or Mac do your own research, try them both out and see which one fits your needs, it is a personal decision.
Congrats on the Mac. For a lot of people Macs are the best computer for accomplishing tasks.
If you look back at the original 1984 Mac Commercial.
you might notice the same thing I have..
All the Grey lifeless people with numbers are the Mac Zealots, and the guy on the screen is Steve Jobs..
To me, The girl represents not forming an alliance with a multi-billion dollar corporation that just wants your Money.
Think different.
I think all of you are ignorant. Windows sucks Apple sucks all computers suck and all of you suck.
