“The first step is a handy device used by many paranormal investigators and researchers called the EMF Meter, or electromagnetic field meter,” writes Solomon. “This device detects any change in the atmosphere due to an electrical current or device, or in cases of haunting and the paranormal this meter can pinpoint any change in the surrounding electromagnetic field which can mean that an energy or spirit is trying to gather the strength that it needs to make some sort of manifestation, or appearance.”
“Typically ranging in price from $25 for a no-frills meter that has a dial like a compass that will move according to frequency, to over $150 for a digital meter that displays an LCD reading on the screen – almost doing all of the work for you,” writes Solomon. “Before you attempt to use your EMF meter in any matter of the occult make sure that any unused electrical devices such as microwaves, cell phone chargers or stereo equipment are either turned off or unplugged.”
“A ghost, or manifestation, can begin to show itself by either a sudden drop or increase in the standard EMF reading of the location,” writes Solomon. “Other signs of a possible haunting can include any dramatic changes of temperature, smells like cigar smoke or perfume, or on occasion spirit orb activity.”
According to Solomon, “When any noticeable change in the meter is noticed try holding the meter higher and then lower around you in a circle to try to pinpoint the source of the current – If you find that the current is strongest by an appliance or electrical outlet then the scenario is explained scientifically – But when you are able to locate a fluctuating current and even possibly follow it only to have it disappear and become untraceable then most ghost hunters and enthusiasts alike would agree that you have just been lucky enough to come in contact with the the other side.”
