For over 30 years, Temple University professor David Jacobs has been educating students on the history of UFOs — Unidentified Flying Objects — and their relation to American society.
Jacobs has published four books and numerous articles, and is world-renowned as a scholar on the subject.
He teaches a course within the History Department in which students examine reports of unexplained phenomenon throughout modern history. Large numbers of sightings began in the late 19th century.
“The controversy is whether there are more sightings or just more reports of sightings,” Jacobs says.
Another class, offered by the American Studies Department, investigates the effects of UFO phenomenon on the scientific community, the military and the media, as well as what Jacobs refers to as the “lunatic fringe.”
“We also look at abduction phenomena,” says Jacobs, who since 1986 has been personally interviewing people who claim to have been abducted.
Dr. Jacobs will be teaching the course in the History Department at Temple under the title “Topics in American History” in the fall.
